After deciding to work in social care for the very first time, Helen couldn’t be happier with her new career and the difference she’s able to make to others.

Vivo Care Choices, which is moving back to Cheshire West and Chester Council as an in-house service from April 2022, is currently recruiting staff for its services across west Cheshire.

Helen joined the team at Dorin Court last December and supports people with learning disabilities and autism who access Vivo’s respite services.

Despite having no previous experience in social care, Helen has become a valuable member of the team, highlighting there are great opportunities whether you’re starting out or looking to develop your career.

She said: “During lockdown, I realised how much need there is for people out there to receive support.

“I’m a mum, but all my kids are now grown up so I wanted to do something for me and give back to the community.

“I like the idea of being a motherly figure to the people we support and I’m really enjoying it.

“I’ve been surprised how much I’ve got from it on a personal level as it’s nice to have someone saying thank you to you with a big smile on their face.

“I don’t think society realises how many people in the community need care and support and, for some reason, people can act funny when they see someone with a learning disability or autism.

“I’ve supported many different people and they’re all amazing to work with, but they just need some extra support.”

As someone new to the sector, Helen has learned quickly on the job and is looking to continue to progress her career.

Helen added: “The training courses are great and give you important knowledge to help with what you’re doing day-to-day to support people.

“The more people visit our service, the more I connect with them and it’s lovely to watch their reactions when they see you for a second or third time.

“I’m learning all the time and finding out what people are or aren’t capable of so they’re as independent as possible.

“All the staff are fantastic and work really well together, sharing their knowledge with new members of staff, and that’s been invaluable for me.”

Not only is a job at Vivo extremely rewarding as you can make a big difference to the lives of others, but there are also a range of benefits, such as competitive pay, an excellent pension, a generous holiday allowance and employee rewards and benefits in line with the Council’s terms and conditions.
