Vivo Care Choices staff have been going above and beyond to support people with learning disabilities and autism receive their COVID-19 vaccinations.

As part of the roll out to priority groups, people with learning disabilities and autism are now starting to be booked in for their vaccinations.

Tim, who uses Vivo’s supported living services in Northwich, became distressed and frightened about receiving his first vaccination, but staff worked with Leighton Hospital to rearrange Tim’s appointment, giving him more time to get prepared.

Alongside Tim’s brother, a Vivo staff member working closely with him went along to his appointment. Leighton Hospital was very understanding, making sure Tim was at ease throughout and had everything he needed.

After receiving his first COVID-19 vaccination, Tim will be returning to Leighton Hospital for his second jab in the near future.

Michele Davies, who manages Vivo’s supported living services in Northwich, said: “These are really challenging times for us all and it’s fantastic to see our staff supporting people in this way.

“For people with learning disabilities and autism, there are often anxieties about receiving any type of vaccination or needle so we need to make sure they have all the support they need.

“We appreciate Leighton Hospital being so flexible and arranging another appointment as it was really important for Tim to receive his vaccination.

“Our staff have been amazing throughout the pandemic and this is another example of the lengths they go to so we can make sure people are supported in the best possible way.

“The pandemic has only highlighted how important our services are to the people who depend on them, as well as their carers and family members.”

Vivo staff are also continuing to receive COVID-19 vaccinations, with the vast majority of the workforce already having their first and second doses.
